SUMMARY:Lincoln Center Festival: While I Was Waiting
DESCRIPTION:Digging into the story of one middle-class Damascus family\, the celebrated Syrian team of playwright Mohammad Al Attar and director Omar Abusaada offer a gripping portrait of a country trapped in a gray area between hope and despair. \nBrutally beaten at a checkpoint\, 30-year-old Taim is admitted to the hospital in a coma. As his loved ones gather around him\, they must face a reality defined by uncertainty and absence. What happened to Taim? Will he ever wake up? How has their vibrant\, modern city become so strange and cruel? Unable to communicate\, Taim lingers on the stage\, an observer and commentator\, as long-buried secrets and complicated relationships are revealed. \nInspired by a true story\, the play weaves together different layers of consciousness\, humanizing the situation in Syria and collapsing the distance between the Syrian people and the rest of the world.

SUMMARY:Lincoln Center Festival: Opening Skinner's Box
DESCRIPTION:Why do we love? When would we kill? How do we learn? Why do we believe in the unbelievable? \nWith their trademark mix of wit\, insight\, and inventive stagecraft\, Britain’s Improbable Theatre takes us on a “fascinating\, if at times alarming” (Times\, U.K.) tour of ten famous 20th-century psychological experiments\, starting with B.F. Skinner’s notorious rat boxes. Inspired by Lauren Slater’s acclaimed book\, Opening Skinner’s Box is a time-traveling dialogue with the audacious scientists who set out to unlock the secrets of human behavior. Amidst ethically questionable methods\, shocking results\, and blinding biases\, one thing becomes abundantly clear: Everything we thought we knew about ourselves is wrong.

SUMMARY:World Science Festival- Much Ado About Nearly Nothing: Nanotech And The Future Of Energy
DESCRIPTION:  \nMODERATOR\nWalter Isaacson\nPARTICIPANTS\nSanjoy Banerjee\, Yury Gogotsi\, Patricia Holden\, Paul Weiss\nThe biggest challenge of our time\, meeting the energy demands of an exploding population on a warming planet\, may well be met by manipulating matter on the tiniest of scales — revolutionizing how we power the planet. Join world-class nanoscientists and environmental leaders to explore how the newfound capacity to harness molecules and atoms is accelerating spectacular inventions — including light-weight “wonder materials\,” vital energy-storage technologies\, and new sources of renewable energy — which promise to redefine the very future of energy. \nThe Kavli Prize recognizes scientists for their seminal advances in astrophysics\, nanoscience\, and neuroscience. The series\, “The Big\, the Small\, and the Complex\,” is sponsored by The Kavli Foundation and The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

SUMMARY:World Science Festival- Pondering the Imponderables: The Biggest Questions of Cosmology
DESCRIPTION:  \nMODERATOR\nJim Holt\nPARTICIPANTS\nDavid Z. Albert\, George F. R. Ellis\, Alan Guth\, Veronika Hubeny\, Andrei Linde\nPhysicists and cosmologists are closing in on how the universe operates at its very core. But even with powerful telescopes and particle accelerators pushed to their limits\, experimenters struggle to keep up as theoreticians march forward\, leaving grand theories untested. Is our universe unique or one of many? Was there a before the Big Bang? Why is there something rather than nothing? Some argue that if these deep questions can’t be answered empirically\, they’re not relevant to science. Are they right? Join world-leading cosmologists\, philosophers and physicists as they tackle the profound questions of existence. \nThe Big Ideas Series is supported in part by the John Templeton Foundation.

SUMMARY:World Science Festival- The Social Synapse: Neuroscience And The Roots Of Human Connections
DESCRIPTION:  \nMODERATOR\n\nJohn Donvan\nPARTICIPANTS\nLouise Barrett\, Agustín Fuentes\, Kevin Laland\, Kevin Ochsner\, Dietrich Stout\nWe humans work together on enormous scales\, build complex tools as large as cities\, and create social networks that span the globe. What is the key to this innately social profile? How did it evolve? This program will examine the development of the human brain — and the brains of other animals — asking how neurons and synapses orchestrate communal behavior and guide group interactions\, demonstrating how our social nature is key to our humanity. \nThe Big Ideas Series is supported in part by the John Templeton Foundation.

SUMMARY:World Science Festival- Forever Young: The Promise of Human Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:  \nMODERATOR\nEmily Senay\nPARTICIPANTS\nDany Spencer Adams\, Stephen Badylak\, Doris Taylor\nSynthetic blood mass-produced to meet supply shortages. Livers and kidneys “bioprinted” on demand. Missing fingers and toes re-grown with a jolt of bioelectricity. Regenerative medicine promises to do more than just treat disease\, injuries\, or congenital conditions. It holds the potential to rejuvenate\, heal\, or completely replace damaged tissue and organs. If successful\, regenerative medicine will have immense impact on how we care for the injured\, sick\, and aging — and how we think about death. This program will explore mind-boggling medical advances as well as the societal and economic implications of a future in which everybody may truly be forever young. \nThe Big Ideas Series is supported in part by the John Templeton Foundation.
