SUMMARY:Kizuna Dance presents Father Absence | Mother Ma
DESCRIPTION:Kizuna Dance presents Father Absence | Mother Ma\nwww.cameronmckinneydance.com \nKizuna Dance’s residency and performance at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College are supported by CUNY Dance Initiative. \nFor the company’s 10-year anniversary in 2024\, Kizuna Dance premieres a deeply personal work by Artistic Director Cameron McKinney. A way of processing his father’s death in 2022 – a man Cameron never met — FATHER ABSENCE | MOTHER MA brings a hyperphysical focus to the Japanese concept of “ma\,” or possibilities inherent in the empty spaces between objects and bodies. Through a movement language that blends street dance styles\, capoeira\, and contemporary floorwork\, the work will explore the multiversity of loss and feelings of being left behind.

SUMMARY:“The White Feather”
DESCRIPTION:“The White Feather”\nBased on popular demand\, rave reviews\, and sold-out audiences on the West Coast\, in celebration of the Persian New Year and a new dawn upon us\, we invite you to join us in an unforgettable journey honoring the history of art and expression in Iran through the story of the Iranian National Ballet\, and the fight for freedom by the past and current freedom fighters of our land. In 1979\, Iranian ballet dancers had their art stripped from them and their final bows were never taken. Since then\, the fight for freedom of expression has never ceased. \nThe White Feather is a Persian ballet tale that follows the inner child in all of us who yearn to express themselves freely and demand sovereignty. In tribute to Persian culture and ballet\, through a child’s eyes\, we witness the evolution of Iran from its ancient roots to the present day. Act One\, sheds light on the history of Iran’s National Ballet and its untimely final curtain and unsung heroes of Iran’s first revolution. In Act Two\, we behold a child’s transformation into adulthood under an oppressive regime\, and the fire within that sparked a nation’s call to freedom\, led by women. Original Music by Shahrdad Rohani.

SUMMARY:TEDxCUNY 2024: UNRAVEL
DESCRIPTION:TEDxCUNY 2024: UNRAVEL\nThe strands of our world are composed of our individual differences and collective experiences\, woven together in ways that can seem too complicated to grasp. While it is tempting to surrender in the face of these complexities\, understanding our world requires us to confront the knots in our everyday existence and detangle our perception of reality. To do so\, the first steps are showing up and creating spaces for shared innovation. By nurturing our joint efforts\, we can succeed in making the chaos comprehensible and harnessing the power of our newfound understanding. Join us in our quest to unravel the complexities of life and weave the fabric of our future!

SUMMARY:BRUISED BUT NOT BROKEN (Gospel Musical Stage Play)
DESCRIPTION:BRUISED BUT NOT BROKEN (Gospel Musical Stage Play)\nDuring our theater production of Bruised But Not Broken\, you will step into the lives of the Thomas sisters as they learn more about themselves and each other. Watch as they unveil pieces of themselves…the pieces that they didn’t want anyone to see…the parts of themselves they were ashamed of and tried so desperately to hide. \nBruised But Not Broken is about healing when you think you were too messed up\, too damaged\, and too bruised to heal. This production teaches you how to get up after you have fallen. God’s ability to take what the enemy meant for evil and turn it into good is manifested in every scene. Remember\, bitter becomes sweet when you put it in the Master’s hands.

SUMMARY:BRUISED BUT NOT BROKEN (Gospel Musical Stage Play)
DESCRIPTION:BRUISED BUT NOT BROKEN (Gospel Musical Stage Play) \nDuring our theater production of Bruised But Not Broken\, you will step into the lives of the Thomas sisters as they learn more about themselves and each other.

SUMMARY:TABULA RASA DANCE THEATER "SHIP OF FOOLS" WORLD PREMIERE
DESCRIPTION:Tabula Rasa Dance Theater Premieres Two New Works: Animus Necandi and Ship of Fools  \nWith the support of a CUNY Dance Initiative residency at the Gerald W. Lynch Thetaer\, Tabula Rasa Dance Theater premieres two compelling dance works that arise from the intersection of art and social justice: Animus Necandi and Ship of Fools. \n  \nTickets: https://tabula-rasa-dance-theater.ticketleap.com/ship-of-fools/dates/Sep-20-2024_at_0730PM \nTICKET PRICES:  $45 – $85 ( $25 Students + $0.63 cents for immigrants and formerly incarcerated individuals and their families) \n  \n \n“Animus Necandi” brings attention to the pain of families who have lost relatives condemned to the death penalty. The piece also explores the moral issues of capital punishment\, which continues as a legal practice in more than 55 countries and 27 U.S. States. \n“Ship of Fools” is a dance-theater parable critiquing the global rise of authoritarian leaders. The piece examines the human cost of despotism and exalts the values of knowledge\, wisdom\, and justice. \nBoth works are choreographed by Tabula Rasa’s artistic director\, Mexican-born Felipe Escalante\, who founded the company in 2018 with a deep commitment to addressing complex social issues onstage. Collaborators include Lausanne prize-winning composer Felix Huerta\, lighting designer and Princess Grace award winner Christopher Annas-Lee\, and Columbia University professor and concert pianist John Gavalchin. \nA note on ticket pricing: $0.63 is the average minimum hourly wage paid to incarcerated individuals in the State of New York. By charging 63 cents for a ticket\, Tabula Rasa Dance Theater brings awareness to this human rights issue and makes dance affordable to people who might otherwise be unable to experience live performances. \nTabula Rasa Dance Theater’s residency and performances at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater are part of the CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI)\, an expansive program that secures two vital yet scarce resources—rehearsal time and performance space—for New York City choreographers and dance companies.  Now in its 10th year\, CDI is a residency program that supports local artists\, enhances the cultural life and education of college students\, and builds new dance audiences at CUNY performing arts centers. \nThe CUNY Dance Initiative receives major support from the Howard Gilman Foundation and the Mertz Gilmore Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund’s Charles E. Culpeper Arts & Culture program\, SHS Foundation\, Harkness Foundation for Dance\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. www.cuny.edu/danceinitiative \n \nhttps://www.tabularasadancetheater.com/ \n  \n
